Cold days, coal days

With the cold weather we are having, I cannot help but think back to our four-roomed schoolhouse. Each room held two grades, taught by one teacher, and warmed by a coal stove. And the students carried in the coal....

No students were assigned to the task, but when it needed to be done, the teacher would ask for two volunteers. I think most of us volunteered. Anything to get out of the classroom, even for a few minutes.

I can remember this one time that my friend and I were chosen, we were already laughing about pronouncing social security. Don't ask me how that came up, but we were sort of having a hard time saying it. It didn't help any that we got tickled about it. It was such a relief to get outside and laugh out loud without getting in trouble.

  1. I sure remember those days. Just about all the kids would "volunteer" go outside to get the coal and, of course, we were never in a hurry. :)
